Back in 2020, I diligently paid my income taxes on time, as I have done every year without error. My entire life, I had never encountered a tax problem. Imagine my shock when I received a letter from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) stating that I owed them a substantial amount of money. My heart sank, my stomach churned, and I felt dizzy.

Allow me to share the context. In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. As chemotherapy began, her health deteriorated significantly. With no nearby family support, the responsibility fell squarely on my shoulders.

I exhausted all my paid time off and even took unpaid days to care for my wife. While my compassionate boss understood the situation, her patience wore thin.
